A representative from the Boren Awards will give a presentation and do a Q&A with interested students and faculty who might be interested in learning more about the programs. 

 

David L. Boren Scholarships & Fellowships

Sponsored by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), Boren Awards provides funding for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study less commonly

taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad.

Through long-term overseas study, Boren Scholars and Fellows learn to communicate across cultures, and analyze economic, political, religious, and societal events from local, national, and global perspectives. As a condition of the award, Boren recipients fulfill a service requirement by working in qualifying positions within the U.S. federal government.

Program Options & Maximum Awards

BOREN SCHOLARSHIPS

Applicants select a study abroad program in consultation with their study abroad office and Boren Campus Representative.

• $25,000/25-52 weeks
• $12,500/12-24 weeks
• $8,000/8-11 weeks (STEM majors only)

BOREN FELLOWSHIPS

Applicants design their programs in consultation with academic advisors to include language study and optional elements of additional courses, research, or academic internships.

• $30,000/domestic and overseas study
• $25,000/25-52 weeks overseas
• $12,500/12-24 weeks

FLAGSHIP LANGUAGE INITIATIVES

Boren Scholarship and Fellowship applicants may also elect to apply for special regional Flagship Language Initiatives that offer high-quality, for credit

instruction in the languages Akan/Twi, French, Indonesian, Swahili, Thai, Vietnamese,

Wolof, and Zulu.
