Fostering Independence is a support group for students who've been in foster care, kinship care or do not have family support.  In the group we'll talk about different skills like budgeting, how to set up a bank account, how to find an apartment, and other adult living skills.  We'll also help connect students to resources both on campus and the community.

Schedule for Fall 2025 Semester:

9/9 –  Realistic Job Searching - Be able to safely search for jobs in person/online while within a reachable goal while being able to identify potential scam postings.

9/23 – Mental Health Awareness and Resources - Understand the definition of mental health. Be able to notice signs of mental health struggles and find local resources and practices to provide support.

10/7 -  Midterm Mayhem: A Survival Guide – Learn new strategies for time management and study skills to help prepare you for midterms.

10/21 – Conflict Management - Using your strengths, weakness, and what you value to work better with others who are different than you and how to have tough conversations with others while reflecting on your own actions and behaviors.

11/4 – Break Survival Kit – How to survive fall and winter breaks with resources for food and place to stay, and potentially dealing with family.

12/2 – Meal Planning – Learn how to plan, shop, prepare and host an affordable Friendsgiving or holiday meal.

12/9 – End of Semester Celebration!  We’ll collectively decide on a fun outing to celebrate surviving the semester.
