Guyandotte, on Buffington Street near the floodwall

In May 2025, the National Park Service announced that 31 new sites, including eight in the Tri-state Area, were placed on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom—a prestigious recognition that honors the significant historical contributions to the fight for freedom, from the Underground Railroad to Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement.

For the first time ever, two of the eight new sites are in Cabell County, WV. To celebrate this remarkable achievement, on June 24, at 10 A.M. and Noon, respectively, the marker dedication ceremonies for two sites, one adjacent to Green Bottom/Jenkins Plantation on Rt. 2 and the other in Guyandotte, on Buffington Street near the floodwall, to join the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom will be held. These markers will chronicle the remarkable stories of "Moses, Joshua, and Joe," and John Major Monroe, respectively, and will be the first in the history of the state to formally celebrate the bravery, intelligence, and persistence of freedom seekers who successfully escaped their bondage from Cabell County.

These events are part of the Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tour and is supported by several organizations, including the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), Lawrence Economic Development Corporation (LEDC), Shawnee State University, Marshall University, and Unlimited Future, Inc.
